Moel Hiraddug
Moel Hiraddug submitted by TimPrevett : The silhouette of the precipitous Iron Age hill fort of Moel Hiraddug, viewed from the NE. This is the northernmost of a number of hillforts which sit upon the Clwydian range of hills. The ramparts are extensive, defining the perimiter at some 2400 feet long, and between 240 and 480 feet wide; the main entrance sits on the SE, with other entrances upon the S and NW. Some hut circles can be seen. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: Moel Hiraddug by Anonymous on Wednesday, 27 April 2022
Walked up to Moel Hiraddug this morning just to experience the hill fort, took my breath away with the views and atmosphere of the iron age foundations that are still visible, sat down for a while too take in the energies of the past, and wondered what it was like all those years ago, a very special place and highly recommended, I live just a ten minute drive from there, and seen the hill from a distance, but just today decided to take a climb in the spring weather, my first but definitely not my last, I plan to be at the summit for the summer solstice and invite any fellow pagans too join me

There is also a cave on the south west of the hillfort, by the mast, and lots of scree on the west and east indicating possible walls in the past. You can also see Trelawnydd's pre-historic mound from here.

I've driven past so many times and seen it from Rhyl so many times but I've just resolved to get myself up there and see it close at hand.

Shame about the quarry impact but less enlightened times.. and people have to eat etc.

Access to this imnpressive hill fort is best tackled from Moel Hiraddug Road (free parking available at the large car park for the Dyserth to Prestatyn Railway walk). Travel along the lane gradually uphill in a southerly direction then take the signposted footpath for Cwm heading SW across two fields - styles provided! Head for the RT Masts but zig zag NE/NW - crossing the wall/ditch of the hillfort in the process. Remnants of a few hut circles are visible on the descent. The summit is an elongated oval with a steep slope running down the West flank. Beware of the large drop down to the floor of the quarry from the Northern end. It is fenced off with warning signs. The is a cave within the quarry on the NE cliff face.Permission is needed from the quarry owners to get access to that site - directly form the lane running W from Hiraddug Road or directly from Dyserth High Street. The views from the summit of Moel Hiraddug are stunning - Wind Turbines out to sea to the North preceeded by Craig Fawr, the Gop Hill (largest cairn in Wales) at 258m , the Clwydian Hills and running clockwise to a view of Snowdonia especially Moel Siabod with its distinctive shape.
