Excellent site with great views but parking is essentially tucking into a gateway. There is no public access but it isn't far from the road and gateway and is only a small site. Not to be confused with the many other Tywn-y-Gaer sites which literally just means hillfort in Welsh.

Coflein page has some good photos and lists it as a Defended Enclosure in Honddu Isaf.

Fantastic location for some of the best views of the brecon beacons and Hay Bluff; best time to visit is on a crisp clear winter day - all the contours will be seen and the panorama is phenomenal!

The comment on 6th August refers to a different Twyn-y-gaer, as you can see from the GR given for the pub. That one is 15 or so miles east, on the southern slopes of the Black Mountains, near Forest Coalpit. It may be in the parish of Llanfihangel Crucorney.

I too like your February correspondent drive past the Llaneglwys Twyn-y-gaer frequently. (I think it's properly Garthbrengy; Llaneglwys finishes at the southern end of Brycheiniog Forest).
The interesting thing about it, besides the sensational views (which include the much larger hill fort Pen-y-Crug outside Brecon), is the double line of low mounds presumably leading to an entrance. I believe this is unusual.

Many of the surrounding parishes, eg Gwenddwr and Crickadarn to the north, have a hill fort some way above the present settlement.

My wife and I visited the site today (06/08/06), we walked from the Queens Head Ref SO311221 a road walk of about 1.5 miles an elevation of some 350 metres above our start point, we took the Southern route footpath below Twyn y Gaer, at one stretch it was almost hidden by seven foot tall Bracken, however the trip was worth it magnificent views in all directions.
PS the walk was made easier after a pint and a bar meal at the Queens Head.

Drive past is almost every day. Has a very good view of the Brecon Beacons.
