Cairn in West Lothian

This cairn is recorded as Canmore ID 49309, the latest entry from 1974 telling us: "An undisturbed cairn measuring 11.5m in diameter with a large boulder kerb remaining for most of the circumference." A previous entry from 1952 says a small modern cairn surmounts the older cairn.

This stone is also featured on the Ancient Stones: A Guide to Standing Stones and Stone Circles in the South of Scotland - see their entry for Cairn, Beecraigs, Torphichen, which includes a description, directions for finding the stone with nearby parking, and fieldnotes.

Cockleroy Hill (Beecraigs)
Cockleroy Hill (Beecraigs) submitted by Anne T : The trig point at the eastern end of the hillfort; the sides of the fort slope steeply down around 3 sides at this point so could be easily defended. No features were really visible within the fort itself. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Cockleroy Hill (Beecraigs)
Cockleroy Hill (Beecraigs) submitted by Anne T : Reaching the top of the hill fort, to its eastern side is a trig point and view point. The water below is Lochcote Reservoir. On the day of our visit it was possible to see the Forth Bridges at Queensferry. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Cockleroy Hill (Beecraigs)
Cockleroy Hill (Beecraigs) submitted by Anne T : About one third of the way up to the path to the top of Cockleroy Hill. No outer ditches can really be seen, although there are modern-ish quarries lower down the slope which might be interpreted as defensive structures. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Cockleroy Hill (Beecraigs)
Cockleroy Hill (Beecraigs) submitted by Anne T : First view of Cockleroy Hillfort, having walked from the small car park to the gate into the field. The hill rises reasonably steeply up to 278 metres and has a trig point and view point on top. (Vote or comment on this photo)
