Standing Stone in Perthshire

Information on this 9 foot tall standing stone can be found on Canmore ID 26276. In their 1998 report, Canmore record:"A standing stone close to the entrance to the driveway at Balnakeilly was drawn to the attention of HS by the owner, Lt Col Stewart. A series of tool marks and the general regularity of the stone suggested that it might be of relatively modern origin, although its position, set back slightly from the road, was not as obvious as might be expected if the stone was a recent feature. Inspection of OS maps, however, indicated that although recorded on the 2nd edition map, it was absent from the 1st edition, while other nearby standing stones were marked on both. It appears that the stone was probably erected in the mid- to late 19th century to adorn the entrance to Balnakeilly."

The Northern Antiquarian's Balnakeilly Stone, Moulin, Pitlochry, Perthshire page gives directions on how to find this stone, together with photographs and the archaeology and history of the immediate area.

Balnakeilly - directions by BigSweetie on Tuesday, 01 June 2004
(User Info | Send a Message)
Head N from Perth on the A9 (sign-posted Inverness). After about 40.0km, take the turn-off to the left for Pitlochry. This road (the A924) takes you back under the A9, and follows the River Tummel into the centre of Pitlochry. About 500m after passing under the railway bridge, take the road up to your right (sign-posted A924 & Moulin) and go straight over the mini-roundabout into Moulin. Park opposite the Moulin Inn, and walk continue walking up the road for 200m to the gates of Balnakeilly House - you can't miss the gates, but it's easy to miss the stone camouflaged amongst the trees! It's on the left of the gates as you look at them.

Balnakeilly - description by BigSweetie on Tuesday, 01 June 2004

There is some debate as to whether this is a genuine standing stone, or a mid- to late-19th century adornment. It stands amongst tall trees beside the gates to Balnakeilly House, and certainly looks real.

It has been suggested that tool marks found on the stone mean it is likely to be modern, although having seen similar marks on undoubtedly ancient stones, I don't buy this theory. It's position makes it unlikely to have been erected in the 19th century, hidden as it is from the road by the trees, and tucked in behind the gate post.

I certainly believe this is the real deal.
