Stone Row / Alignment in Caithness

Borlum Stone Row, now destroyed, is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Borlum, which includes a description, and links to other online resources for more information. SRoGB tells us the row "was made up of 52 small stones forming a multiple row/avenue 25.5 metres long. The site is at an altitude of 68 metres with a view out to sea, and the row would have been at an orientation of 138 degrees".

Described by Canmore in record Canmore ID 91620 , the formation sounds fascinating: "Approximately 52 small stones sat in about 8 fanshaped rows converge towards a small mound of stones at the narrow end of the fan and some 12.5m distant. Overall widths of rows 11m and 19m at narrow and wide ends of the fan respectively. Central alignment of rows approximately 318deg. true. Ground slopes upwards slightly towards the mound from the base of the rows." The record goes on to say that in 1994 only one definite stone setting was found during a pre-afforestation survey and adds the site is crossed by an old boundary dyke.

The row is also recorded in the Highland Historic HER; see MHG19431 (Stone Rows, Borlum).

Note: Have you visited this site? Have you found anything that could help our understanding of the context of this stone row? Do you have any historical drawings or illustrations you could contribute?
