Maen Serth submitted by TimPrevett : The stone, with the location of Esgair Perfedd to the rear - a Roman Marching Camp said to take up to 4,000 soldiers, and believed to be constructed during the last Campaign against the (for us) Welsh. Did the Romans use these ridge top markers to help follow the route into the mountains? I reckon they did. Then I picture 4,000 tired, but battle ready Roman soldiers passing this stone some 1900 ye... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone in Powys

An upright monolith, 2.06m high by 0.53m by 0.18m, having a cross deeply incised in its SE side, traditionally commemorates the murder of Einion Clud in 1177. The stone has been reset in concrete.

This was a belated birthday treat, as my aborted visit to find Maengwyngweddew on my birthday also aborted the visit to Maen Serth! Thankfully, we returned, and on a fantastic day, too.
