Sacred lake in South Glamorgan. One of the most significant prehistoric metalwork hoards in Wales, containing cauldrons, weaponry and other metalwork from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages, was discovered when the lake was parly drained in 1911-1913 for the construction of a new reservoir.

The long-held assumption is that this hoard was ritually deposited in a 'sacred lake'. The name of the lake, 'Fawr', meaning 'great' or big', may be significant in this context.

I was delighted to find out recently that the original cwm (glacial lake) has a Lady of the Lake associated with it . Also it was said that you couldn't throw a stone into the water from the heights above as invisible fairies would catch it before it hit the lake.

Do have a go at the stone-throwing next time you're there, you could video the invisible faeries in action ;-)
