Hillfort in Dumfries and Galloway
Beacon hill is a univallate iron age hill fort situated between the villages of Shawhead and Terregles. It commands great views and can be seen from miles around. the best view is probably from a layby on the A75 near Drummore heading down towards Dumfries.
More information onCanmore ID 65643, which, in a 1914 entry says: "The fort on Beacon Hill is apparently contained by a single ditch 8 to 10 feet deep, surmounted in places by a stony rampart, and with a slighter mound above the counterscarp. The trench seems to have terminated at the steep slopes to the east and south. A rock outcrop forms a natural citadel towards the north end of the interior."
