Pen Yr Orsedd Ring Cairn
Pen Yr Orsedd Ring Cairn submitted by TAlanJones : View to the south across the cairn site. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Situated 5k along the Hiraethog Trail that leads to the upland lakes from the village of Pentrefoelas the cairn lies on a gentle northerly slope 120m to the east of the trail and some 350m SW of the Pen Yr Orsedd summit. Coflein has the monument recorded as NPRN 303327 but provides no description. However, Coflein has provided several photographs but they do not tally with my observations and photos taken during my visit to the site.

The cairn has an 8m+ diameter. It appears to have a raised outer ring of stones about 0.6m wide, best displayed on its S and W side, with a flatter lower interior mainly to the S, W and N (possibly interfered with) and a raised cairn (about 0.8m high) of medium to small stones mainly occupying the centre east side. It looks like a ring cairn but it may also be a round cairn that has been robbed?

The environment is particularly blessed with prehistoric activity and the Hiraethog Trail allows access to many of these identified monuments.
