Waun Lydan
Waun Lydan submitted by pab : Waun Lydan, Powys. Quartz-streaked menhir strategically placed to be in sight of some very distant prehistoric features. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Described on COFLEIN and RCAHMW as a '..massive standing stone, 1.5m high, 1.1m wide and 0.6, thick, this menhir stands above the ancient settlement of Craig Llysiau, and within sight of the white quartz menhir on Pen Maen Wern.

It also has a wonderful view south across to the (now) quartz-capped cairns of Drygarn Fawr.

The stone is not composed entirely of white quartz - being instead veined with quartz, but having some truly amazing mixtures of material - which hopefully some of my later pictures will show.

NB - very good boots required up here - some seriously boggy and wet ground!

Waun Lydan submitted by Postman : Pen Maen Wern standing stone is on the far away rocky hill top, it's pretty hard going getting there from here, but worth it. Mmmmm quartz.

PAB - have you just been on holiday to the Rhayader area? We've just been based at Newbridge on Wye for 12 nights, and I've been out stomping these mountains too!

Hi Shropshire Traveller - yes, long weekend staying near Abergwesyn! We walked a 14 mile circuit on Saturday to take in Drygarn Fawr, everywhere was so wet and boggy, paths & streams all looked the same - it was exhausting. We did see a group walking towards Drygarn Fawr just before 3pm - could that have been your group?!

Down to 7 miles Sunday, but went as far as Llyn Carw from Rhiwnant - absolutely magical there, and saw no-one in all 7 miles!

Well, we were in the same area then! Camped at Pont Ar Ithon on the Builth road. Came home two days early due to unrelenting rain...

All my stones visiting was done either early morning (5:30 to 11am) or evening (7:30 to couldn't see!) and by myself - so no group.

I was up on Rhos y Gelennen above Garreg Ddu early Friday morning (agree with your comments about bogginess and footwear), and off the Rhayader - Aberystwyth road Sunday evening... photos arriving today and beyond.
