Maen Leuci stone setting
Maen Leuci stone setting submitted by cerrig : This is looking N/W. You can see here that the centre stone is just that, and although described as a roughly squared structure, it's shape is also a classic cross shape, with the tallest stone, on the right here, as the base. The stump of the fifth stone can be seen nearest to the camera here. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stones in Powys quoted on the RCAHMW Coflein website as being the only known Quincunx outside of Exmoor.

It's a 5 stone setting, with 4 stones, very roughly squared, set around a central boulder. The sides are approx. 10 feet long each.

It is about 30 meters West from the nearby Dan yr Ogof to Trecastle road, on open moorland close to a stream, hiding in tussocky grass. The only clue being the huge knee high monolith that dominates the site. You can reputedly see MaenMawr standing stone to the south from it's top, but I've never been brave enough to try. Maen Lechi is visible up the slope to the East, and the Black mountain, Fan Brycheiniog, can be seen to the West.

It is a very neat and well preserved setting, only discovered a few years ago,and if you are in the area it's worth a visit, just be careful you don't stub your toe. According to RCAHM Wales this is the only known Quincunx outside of the West country, so it's a bit of an enigma to be found in the Brecon Beacons.

A parking spot, about 100 meters away, is commonly used by visitors to Maen Llechi standing stone on the slope above.

RCAHMW nprn number is 404184

Maen Leuci stone setting submitted by cerrig : This is looking East, towards the road. Further up the hill, near the skyline, is Maen Llechi standing stone. There is a fifth stone, but it's just a stump now, hiding in the grass to the right of the largest upright. The rest of it left before the others became famouse. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Maen Leuci stone setting submitted by cerrig : Thingy showing how he does his high level shots, at the Quincunx. As you can see he isn't really 12 feet tall, but he does have the longest thinnest arms I have ever seen. (3 comments)

Maen Leuci stone setting
Maen Leuci stone setting submitted by cerrig : This is looking S/E. The opposite view to the N/W alignment. There are 3 different shapes of stone used here; the 2 stones on the West are flat slabs;the centre stone is a rounded boulder; and the upright on the left is more rectangular in section. Some kind of a code of sorts maybe, who knows? The broken stump can only be guessed at now, there is no sign of the missing part,(although there was ...

The stones are more of a diamond shape than a square. The diagonals, from the centre stone, being 3 of 6 feet and 1 of 3 feet 6 inches, giving an overall diamond of 12 feet x 9 feet 6 inches.
