Broch in Sutherland. Carrol is a relatively remote broch, located in a large forest clearing at an altitude of about 100 metres, about half a kilometre west of Loch Brora in Sutherland, at the end of a four kilometre walk from the road-end. It can be difficult to find, but following the >Allt Coire Aghaisgeig burn (there's a stile at the forest fence just beside the burn), will take you within 50 metres of your target

On approach the broch appears as just a conical mound of stones. But this is an illusion, as the outer walls of Carrol are concealed under the clearance that was excavated from the interior by the Duke of Sutherland during the 1870s. The interior of the broch is quite outstanding, with walling close to four metres tall standing round the entire structure.
There is an entrance passsage on the east-southeast but this is partly collapsed making it almost impossible to enter the broch. Nevertheless, a circuit of the broch is quite an experience. On the west, a long staircase of at least a dozen steps leads down into the galleried wall, and at its foot stands a door-frame—lined by massive stone slabs—which would have led from the gallery into the interior. Then, immediately after comes a long stretch of gallery leading all the way round to the entrance. At the time of excavation half this gallery was still roofed over but now most of it
has lost its lintels and is open to the air.
