Marchnad Mawr Settlement
Marchnad Mawr Settlement submitted by TAlanJones : Oval enclosure. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Situated on relatively flat moorland the site overlooks the route from the Mawddach Estuary eastwards to Llyn Tegid (Bala), Gwynedd. There are enclosures and buildings consistent with agricultural homesteads. An archaeological survey conducted in 2013 concluded that the settlement was 'probably prehistoric.'

The largest enclosure has a diameter of 24m and there are the footings of several oval and rectangular buildings apparent.

There are two Bronze Age cairns very close to the settlement site and several ancient trackways cross the moorland. The Romans were also present, with a military fort at Brithdir and Bala, and a nearby camp at Gwanas Fawr in The valley below.
