chrisboucher visited on 1st Jun 2023 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 2 Still standing proud, visible when approached from Rhandirmywn. On nearing it is hidden by a false summit however the track goes past it. It is very dry up there at the moment and moor-fire warnings have been issued locally.

Mynydd Mallaen
Mynydd Mallaen submitted by pab : Standing Stone on Mynydd Mallaen, looking across to the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountain along the horizon. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone (Menhir) in Carmarthenshire (Sir Caerfyrddin).
This stone is wonderfully located on the Mynydd Mallaen above Rhandirmwyn, and offers magnificent views across to the Brecon Beacons including Pen y Fan and Carmarthen Fan.

The very exposed location has clearly taken its toll of the stone itself, which is made of gray slate - the nature of which inevitably makes it susceptible to splintering as can be seen on the most easterly edge.

It stands 1.4m high, but its position on a slight rise meant that it was visible from a kilometre away. It is also visible from the Maen Bach standing stone and the Crugiau Merched (Ladies' Cairns).
The stone features on the RCAHM site, their reference NPRN 304538, which refers to it simply by the name of the mountain (mynydd meaning mountain in Welsh).

Confusingly, in its reports on the nearby sites mentioned above, RCAHM gives other spellings of the mountain, such as Mynydd Maelaen and Mynydd Melaen, but these seem to be oversights rather than legitimate alternatives.

Mynydd Mallaen
Mynydd Mallaen submitted by Horatio : Veing more of slate this stone has been suffered the effects of all the weather has to throw at it and it shows in those splits and gnarled edges. It must get unbelievable cold in winter and the snow, and freezing temperatures, this stone has been through it all. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Mynydd Mallaen
Mynydd Mallaen submitted by pab : Site in Carmarthenshire (Sir Caerfyrddin) Detail of the (eroded?) eastern tip, with contours of the Brecon Beacons along the horizon. It is probably fanciful, but the match between some of the indentations and the horizon seemed at least curious...or perhaps contrived? A couple of hour's walk can have that effect!
