Re: Morangie Forest by markj99 on Friday, 30 May 2025

Morangie Forest Long Cairn is marked as Carn Liath on OS Mapping and named Carn Liath in Canmore. Given the multitude of Carn Liaths in Scotland it is necessary to refer to it as Carn Liath (Morangie Forest) or Carn Liath (Tain). It is a long cairn at the top of a slope, running from NE-SW in a large forest clearing in Morangie Forest, c. 3 miles WSW of Tain. According to Canmore ID 14553 it measures c. 35m on the NE-SW Axis and 14 m transversely on the NE end tapering to 8m on the SW end. There are several excavation pits on the cairn but no evidence of a chamber.

Re: Directions to Morangie Forest by markj99 on Friday, 30 May 2025

Take the Scotsburn turn off the A9 Tain Bypass. Follow the road for c. 1.8 miles to the right turn for Aldie Burn Car Park. Turn left into the car park after 50 yards. You can proceed from here on foot or by mountain bike. Take along a forest track heading NW which winds W along forest tracks for c. 2.2 miles to reach NH 7296 7969. Look for a forest ride heading NW then turn N towards a stony cairn in a large clearing. My walking route is viewable on Carn Liath (Morangie Forest).
