Standing Stone (Menhir) in Dumfries and Galloway
This holed Standing Stone obviously had a hole through it at one stage but it has since been broken.
The stone is on the end of a ridge overlooing the Blackmark Burn and the A712, is made of a whinstone slab and measures 2ft 6ins by 4ft 9ins and 3 feet high.
Nearby a Castle Motte was built.
For more information see Canmore ID 64766 which records the hole had probably originally been a natural cup mark, which was broken in about 1840. "The stone is reputed to have been used in connection with handfasting."
At one point it was thought to have been part of a stone circle, but several of the stones have been proven to be bedrock protruding through the turf.
