TheCaptain visited on 13th Sep 2023 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 2 Over a couple of mounds, and there is another catchily named site, Monument 280, of which I have no idea what type of site this is. There are many stones stood and arranged, but with no obvious pattern. There is a circle in the middle of them, and several in a straight line through the middle. Is that a burial cist beside one of the large stones? I see online something which states that in 1845 this was described as three circles. Time for lunch, and I notice a pair of glasses within what looks to me like a burial cist, with a leather strap hanging over the large stone beside it.

The feature now known to be "Monument 280" is thought to be the remains of a ring cairn and its surroundings. The structure does seem to be roughly circular in plan.

I see that on Coflein, the region of these stones has entries for Penmaenmawr Stone Circle, C all the way up to Penmaenmawr Stone Circle, M. But very little detail given for any of them.

However, in an entry for "Penmaenmawr Stone Circle;Stones near The Druids Circle, Dwygyfylchi", coflein.gov.uk/en/site/93512/ , it states "In 1845 these stones were said to form three circles. Source: Arch. Camb. 1846."

Position updated, thanks. There's some confusion here - the description seems to apply to Cefn Coch (previous coordinates for this), but photos of Monument 280. And Cefn Coch photos appear on the Circle 278 site page.

This seems to correspond to Cefn Coch, Coflein NPRN 300946. No reference to the Monument 280 in this record, so not sure where that name comes from.

There was some correspondence with Frances Lynch, a very noted North Wales archaeologist, who refers to it with that name. From the same school of thinking which gives a circle the name "Circle 275"!

Ah, the penny drops. I wasn't aware of that correspondence - thanks for letting me know. Is there any way of getting hold of Frances's correspondence so it can be linked in?
      Best wishes,

Thanks, Tim. Much appreciated. I only joined the Portal in 2014, so this was a little before my time. Interesting reading. Thanks again!
