SandyG visited on 29th Apr 2018 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 5 Access: 1 Car parking is available at SS 72444 40419. From here take the footpath north to SS 72311 42209. Turn left and follow the path to Woodbarrow Gate at SS 71648 42509. Enter Woodbarrow Hangings and follow the northern side of the wall past some very fine cairns to a gateway SS 70833 42583. From here head south west. Perhaps you will have more luck than I did. The stones were seen in 2018 and I have seen photographs of them. I am going to try and have another look when I am next on Exmoor.

Longstone Barrow Row submitted by thecaptain : There should be three stones in a row here. I spent much time searching around amongst the tall wet grasses and heather, but I couldn’t find a single stone. (Vote or comment on this photo)
My notes for this say that there should be three stones in a row, with nowadays possibly one of them missing.

I spent much time searching around amongst the tall wet grasses and heather, but I couldn’t find a single stone.

Update November 2019: This row is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Longstone Barrow, which tells us that of the original three stones in this 9m long row, only two now survive. SRoGB notes: "These stones were not found during a visit in May 2018. However Jack Fuller of Exmoor National Park Authority did successfully find them at around the same time. A second attempt to find this row will be made".

The SRoGB entry includes a photograph of the approximate location of the row plus access information. The row is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 35465 and as MDE1317 (Prehistoric stone setting southwest of Longstone Barrow) on the Exmoor National Park HER. Whilst the location of the standing stones is shown on the Historic England map search, there is no listing or scheduling information.

The SRoGB notes there is a significant visual link from the row to Hartland Point.

I spent much time searching around amongst the tall wet grasses and heather, but I couldn’t find a single stone here. I did find a couple of lizards running about (what, at this time of year ? maybe they were quick moving newts), lots of frogspawn and a big dead bird amongst the long grass and heather.

Maybe I am putting too much faith in the given grid references (from an Exmoor Archaological survey book) and using my gps to get to the correct point, but I have no other way of finding these places, I do look around as I am walking, and search over quite a wide area.
