Baile Mhargaite
Baile Mhargaite submitted by hamilton : This stitched panorama illustrates the fine walling that remains inside this broch. It is believed that these walls continue down for another two metres or so, the broch having been filled by wind-blown sands over the centuries. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Broch in Sutherland

Details of the broch can be found on The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) page for Baile Mhargaite, Bettyhill, Sutherland. This web page gives excellent directions for finding the broch, together with photographs and the archaeology and history of the immediate area.

Further information can also be found at Canmore ID 5786, which dates this broch to the iron age and adds: "The broch, protected on three sides by steep rocky slopes and approached from the west across a low saddle, is generally as described by the previous authorities. In recent years a crude wall has been built around the top of the inner face. The position of the entrance is uncertain, but the most likely situation is in the west arc at the easiest means of approach, where one possible lintel slab is partially exposed in the tumble. This west side is further defended by the remains of an outer wall, which probably extended to connect with the natural slopes of the north-west and south-west of the broch, utilising in its course natural rock outcrops, but severe denudation and overburden of stone fallen from the broch renders its extent uncertain. A short stretch of an outer base course is evident towards the north end adjacent to a gap corresponding to the assumed broch entrance. Outside of this there are traces of a possible wall fringing the access way, but recent reconstruction confuses the nature of the remains. The name 'Sandy Dun' cannot be verified."

Baile Mhargaite Cist 1
Baile Mhargaite Cist 1 submitted by hamilton : This, the third cist at the Baile Mhargaite settlement, is the one mentioned by Northern Antiquarian. Very much a poor relation to the other two cists, this one lies about 25 metres slightly west of north from them, on low ground. It lacks both capstone and end stones, and is found in an area of level ground. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Baile Mhargaite
Baile Mhargaite submitted by hamilton : From outside, Baile Mhargaite is little more than a disorganised heap of stones.
