Carn Llechart Chambered Tomb
Carn Llechart Chambered Tomb submitted by Robc : Carn Llellechart Stone Circle at SN69730627. This Bronze age ring cairn is unusual in that is a circle of contiguous slabs. In the middle of the circle is a stone cist with its east side and capstone missing. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The remains of this tomb lie about 100yds NW of Carn Llechart ring cairn.

Although in a collapsed state, the size of the stones is impressive.

Carn Llechart Chambered Tomb
Carn Llechart Chambered Tomb submitted by SandyG : View from north west highlighting the dump of waste material thrown downslope during the quarrying process. The disposition of the rocks and associated dumps are entirely consistent with a quarrying operation (28th December 2014). (Vote or comment on this photo)

Carn Llechart Chambered Tomb
Carn Llechart Chambered Tomb submitted by SandyG : A large split stone. The thin rock on the left has been split from the slab on the right. This evidence strongly supports the quarrying interpretation. View from above and west (28th December 2014). (Vote or comment on this photo)

Carn Llechart Chambered Tomb
Carn Llechart Chambered Tomb submitted by SandyG : Quarry pits visible at A with waste material dumps at B. Although scheduled as a chambered tomb the surviving features look much more like the result of quarrying. View from south east (28th December 2014). (Vote or comment on this photo)

Carn Llechart Chambered Tomb
Carn Llechart Chambered Tomb submitted by SandyG : Large slabs exposed by trenching along their edges. The material removed was thrown up to form a dump along the western side. View from south east (28th December 2014).

Re: Carn Llechart by TheCaptain on Tuesday, 04 November 2014

Having been fiddling about with these site pages today, and looking at the impressive aerial views available, I am wondering whether this collapsed chamber is central to its own ring cairn? The Bing view (via flash Earth icon) seems to be clearer, but the Google Earth view backs it up with a view from a completely different day and growth pattern.

It looks to me like this large chamber may once have had a ring around it, of about double the size of the nearby ringcairn with smaller cist at the centre. It's not so clear, but there is not only what looks to be remnants of a ring (darker vegetation?) but the whole of the grassy area within this ring is of a darker, more lush green than external to the ring.

And the, with imagination starting to run a bit wild, could there be another two just to the right (sorry east) of the smaller ring cairn?
