TheCaptain visited on 3rd Dec 2022 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Walk from Ponsworthy up and over Corndon Hill, taking in the money pit, Sharp Tor and Dr Blackall's ride, stopping for lunch at the Tavistock Inn. At the top of the northern summit, east west across the top, are two large cairns about 20 to 25 metres diameter, both of which have been mutilated by previous visitors to make crude shelters. There is an ancient reave running across the hill, and I thought I saw signs of a possible row emanating from the northwestern side of the eastern cairn but we weren't hanging around this grey cold windy day, so I didn't spend any time having a proper look.

Corndon Down N Cairns
Corndon Down N Cairns submitted by AngieLake : This view is looking west down over the huge granite pavement below Cairn B, with the seam of hornblende running through it. Notice the slabs placed around the edge. Wouldn't this have made a great ceremonial area for the tribe who built the cairns? (1 comment)

Corndon Down N Cairns
Corndon Down N Cairns submitted by AngieLake : A huge granite 'pavement' lies on the W slope of the N end of Corndon's ridge, just out of sight from the previous one I'd posted. Found this one early April, and amazed to see a seam of small blobs of hornblende orientated towards the large Cairn B. Could it be possible that this is why the cairn is placed there? Could it have been a ceremonial area, facing west, and interesting how various s... (5 comments)
