TheCaptain couldn't find on 6th Dec 2022 Driving back to the cottage from Postbridge, thought I'd have a quick look for the remains of this cairn circle and cist, although I didn't have any details with me and no phone signal. It's not very accurately marked on the OS map I had with me, but I had a walk alonside the river in the boggy ground but it was getting dark and I could find nothing. Reading up on it when home, and its up on the slope somewhere.
Information about this site, the Cator Common Platform Cairn Circle and Cist, came from the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website.
Further information can also be found on the Pastscape website, see Monument Number 442462, which says "the remains of a cairn and cist are alleged at this location ..... oral information/correspondence from Sayer."
The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV53010, dates the cairn and cist from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age (4000 BC to 701 BC) and describes it as a prehistoric ring cairn with three orthostats and a possible cist.
The site is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1021428 (Ring cairn 296m south east of Riddon Brake), which adds: "The monument includes a ring cairn situated on a gentle south west facing slope overlooking the Walla Brook. The ring cairn survives as a 5.5m diameter flat topped circular mound standing up to 0.4m high. Around the southern edge of the mound are three edge set orthostats which represent the remains of a kerb which may survive elsewhere as a buried feature. A flat stone protruding through the turf within the southern part of the mound may represent a displaced cist coverstone".
