East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Postman : Looking over the brilliant house circle to the quite good hut circle. I'm not a hut circle supremacist or anything, they can look any way they want. I just prefer big ones. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Four lovely hut circles, near Fernworthy on Dartmoor. So easy to get to and so rewarding to see, One of them is written on the 1:25000 OS map as a cairn circle, but it's now classed as another hut, which it is.

The settlement is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 443840, which tells us that one of the hut circles had previously been described as a cairn, but is now interpreted on one of four Bronze Age hut circles. The Devon and Dartmoor HER also has an entry for this site; see MDV107002 (East Lowton Hut Circle Settlement).

The settlement is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1017990 (Partially enclosed stone hut circle settlement 780m south west of Metherall).

Also featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the East Lowton Settlement.

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Bladup : East Lowton settlement, The Southern Hut/Cairn Circle, It used to be listed as a cairn circle, now it's listed as a hut because of the door jamb that you can clearly see in the foreground of this photo. I think it was once both a Cairn Circle and hut, A bronze age Cairn Circle turned later on into an iron age hut.

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Bladup : East Lowton settlement, The Southern Hut/Cairn Circle, Is it a hut or a cairn Circle? it used to be listed as a cairn circle, now it's listed as a hut, I think it was once both, A bronze age Cairn circle turned into an iron age hut, just sometimes it can be both

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Bladup : East Lowton settlement enclosure, Found over the track to the West of the huts

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Bladup : East Lowton settlement Enclosure, Stones on the Western side, I'd guess the stones are to stop large timbers kicking out, this suggests a large wooden fence, no doubt to keep animals in

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Bladup : East Lowton settlement, This enclosure over the track from the huts, It is clearly contemporary with those huts though, Stones at the South West

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Bladup : East Lowton settlement, This enclosure over the track from the hut's isn't marked on OS maps, It is clearly contemporary with the huts though, It's possibly where the people who lived in the hut's kept their animals

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Bladup : East Lowton settlement, The view of the reservoir from near the settlement, The reservoir wasn't there in the past and it would have been a valley the settlement looked down upon

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Bladup : East Lowton settlement, From the North this is the second Hut you come to, It has a ledge on the inside of the outer stones, i imagine that this is seating and this large hut was some sort of meeting place where everyone sat in a circle on the ledge/seating

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Postman : Looking over two hut circles, the Pound ? is just across the forestry track left and the other two hut circles are just the other side of the trees beyond these two.

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Postman : So easy to get to and so rewarding to see, I'm mentally slapping myself for not having come here before despite driving past a dozen times.

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Postman : The highest of the four hut circles, this one has an assortment of big rocks by it.

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Postman : Looking over the third hut circle to number four. One of these four hut circles was once supposed to be cairn circle, I couldn't tell which one, perhaps one of these two.

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Postman : The third hut circle up the forestry track from the car park, you can just see this one through the trees from the big lovely second house. And you can just see the stones of the presumed to be Pound across the track.

East Lowton settlement
East Lowton settlement submitted by Postman : Across the forestry track from the four hut circles there is a large oval stone circle which I presumed to be the remains of a pound or something.
