Piles Hill Cairns
Piles Hill Cairns submitted by thecaptain : On the top of Piles Hill, to the north of the large summit cairn is a smaller, but more well defined cairn about 15m diameter, which has at some point in time been remodelled into a shelter. It has a reasonably well defined ring of stones around its perimeter. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cairns in Devon
Piles Hill Cairns, Piles Hill, Dartmoor.
On the top of Piles Hill are the remains of three cairns.

On the summit is a large cairn about 18 metres diameter, which has had the usual mutilations and digging in its top. Around the outside of this, about 5 metres further, is a large ring, which is perhaps the remains of a platform onto which the cairn was built.

To the north of this is a smaller, but more well defined cairn about 15m diameter, which has at some point in time been remodelled into a shelter. It has a reasonably well defined ring of stones around its perimeter.

The third cairn is no more than a small bump. Visited Sunday, 20th June 2004

Update November 2019: The Piles Hill Stone Ring Cairn Circle at SX 65334 60849 is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website. This bell cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 441922, as MDV5763 (Ring cairn on Piles Hill) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER, and scheduled as Historic England List Entry No. 1012474 (Cairn on Piles Hill).

Piles Hill Cairns submitted by thecaptain : This is a view of the central area of the cairn, which seems to have some sort of structures within it. In the distance can be seen the Longstone, and beyond that, Ugborough Beacon.
