The stones are not very tall but this impressive monument is well worth a visit. The cairn at the W end is ruined but there are remains of a double cist in the centre.

Cosdon Hill Cairn Circle lies at the upper end of the splendid Cosdon Hill triple row on a flattish shelf of land on the eastern side of Cosdon Hill

The remains of the cairn at the uphill end of the rows is approx 8 metres in diameter, and has been substantially messed about with. Despite this, there are the clear remains of a double cist in the centre of the cairn, the downhill one of which still has its capstone largely in place. Several stones also remain in place of an outer ring, which is possibly what is often referred to as a stone circle.

Update September 2019: This platform cairn and cist is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Cosdon (stone row) Platform Cairn Circle and Cist. PDW tells us: "The cairn associated with the Cosdon Hill triple stone row is 26 feet in diameter and contains the remains of two cists; the retaining circle is very irregular. Of the two cists, one is intact, the other has been robbed of the cover-stone and two side-stones".

The cairn is also recorded as part of Pastscape Monument No. 444168 and the Devon and Dartmoor HER entry for MDV48906 (Cairn with cists associated with triple stone row east of Cawsand Beacon). The cairn is also scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1013426 (Triple stone alignment and cairn 780m east of Cawsand Beacon).

The cairn also features as part of the Stone Rows of Great Britain's entry for the Cosdon stone row, which includes photographs of the cairn showing its relationship to the alignment, plus a plan of the row and its associated cairn.

Cosdon Hill Cairn and Stone Rows, Dartmoor, Devon SX643917
Visited Thursday, 3rd June 2004

On a flatter shelf of land on the eastern side of Cosdon Hill are the splendid remains of a cairn and treble stone row.

The three parallel rows run off down the hillside from the cairn in an approximately easterly direction, spaced about 1.5 metres apart for a distance of at least 140 metres, perhaps up to 180 metres to where possibly a large triangular blocking stone can be found.
