SandyG visited on 6th Apr 2013 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 2 This has never been an easy row to get to. When visited in 2013 car parking was available at SX 62524 61120. Recently (2016) this car parking area has been closed making it much more difficult to access this part of the moor. An alternative car parking location is at SX 64342 59548. From here the easiest way to reach the row is probably to head east to the Two Moors Way at SX 65765 59965. Then follow the track north to SX 64683 63454. From here navigate north west taking care when crossing the River Erme. Given the effort to get to the area it would be a good idea to have a look at the Hook Lake Row and if you have time the splendid one on Stalldown as well as some the amazing prehistoric settlements. Another option maybe to park at SX 60395 70806 and approach the row from the north via Crane Hill. A full day but hopefully a rewarding one. Best contemplated in the summer.

Just the occasional stone can be followed from the top of Green Hill, and its remains of a cairn near to the summit at 473 metres altitude. It has to be said that it is a bit of a leap of faith to get the row to this cairn, but in all probabilities the stones are all there buried under the peat.
The cairn itself is fairly indistinct, and takes a good bit of imagination to see what should be here. However its position is given away by the different vegetation growing on it, as is often the case on the moor. This cairn is about 9 metres in diameter, and has the usual hollow at the centre, with a few large block s of stone to be seen, at least one of which is standing on its edge. From here, the stone circle at the southern end of the row is visible, as are the four large pillars of the Stalldon Row on the southern skyline.
Out here, you really are miles away from any habitation or even signs of life, and in a very exposed position in the middle of the almost featureless moor. Not a place to be in bad weather. But on a nice clear day like today, its wonderful being here, although it’s a major walk to get back to the car.
Update August 2019: The whole stone row is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Upper Erme, which includes a description, a simplified plan of the alignment, photographs and an illustration of the sea views visible from the northern end of the row.
The row is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 441623 and on the Devon and Dartmoor HER as MDV5106 (Cairn at the northern end of Stall Moor stone row). The site is scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1003287 (Stall Moor circle and long stone row).
The row is also featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website: Stall Moor (Upper Erme) Stone Row. The cairn, at SX 63665 67796, has its own entry on PDW - see their page for the Green Hill Cairn, which adds: "(the cairn has a) diameter (of) 9m, height 0.7m. The possible remains of a central cist are indicated by a group of large stone slabs".
