Ranny Brookhead Cist
Ranny Brookhead Cist submitted by thecaptain : Ranny Brookhead Cist is rectangular, about 1 metre long by 0.4 metres wide, and still has all four side slabs in place. There is no sign of any cairn or surrounding kerb. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Cist. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Ranny Brookhead cist is in the middle of a featureless bit of moor near the bottom of the dip between Stall Moor and Stalldown Barrow, in amongst the damp ground surrounding the Ranny Brook.

The cist itself is rectangular, about 1 metre long by 0.4 metres wide, and still has four side slabs in place. There is no sign of any cairn or surrounding kerb.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Cist.

Update November 2019: This cist is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Ranny Brook Cist, which tells us that "Three sides of the grave are still in place; the third has been turned back and lies parallel to its original position. To the south of the cist, and about a foot away from the nearest point of the buried side-stone, lies the displaced coverstone. This stone has a greatest length of four feet and a greatest width of two feet six inches".

The cist is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 442243, and as MDV4270 (Cist 150 metres north of Ranny Brook, Stall Moor) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER. Whilst the cist is shown on the Historic England map search, there is no scheduling or listing information for this site.

While walking south from Langcombe Hill towards Stalldown Barrow and the Stalldon Row, I set myself a little navigational task of trying to find this Cist marked on the OS map, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. This is said by Butler to be one of the hardest monuments to find in the whole of Dartmoor, yet with bit of dead reckoning and a spiral search pattern, I was able to find it, although it is not visible from anywhere at more than 10 metres distance.

I thought this was a magnificent find, and it gave me a real feeling of achievement.
