The cairn with its kerbstones is about 4 metres in diameter, and still a good half a metre in height. Centrally within this is a nicely formed rectangular cist, dug out to a good depth, about 1 metre by 0.5 metre in size. The capstone has been displaced to the west, and is still laying on top of the cairn.
I wonder just what gold was found here in the past. All I found in the bottom of the cist was a frog!
Update September 2019: This cairn and cist is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website - see their entry for the Crock of Gold Ring Setting Cairn and Cist, which includes a description, a photograph and links to further sources of information.
The site is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 443343 and on the Devon and Dartmoor HER as: MDV 6308 (Cairn and cists known as the Crock of Gold, Royal Hill).
