Cairn in Devon
Sitting just to the east of a trackway running between Broadall Lake to the west and the River Yealm to the east, this site is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website as the Dendles Waste Ring Setting Cairn and Cist. Their notes tell us: "the (cairn) circle consists of eight flat slabs, set on edge and has an internal diameter of approximately 3.4m. Some of the stones from the western quadrant of the circle are missing; a single earthfast stone is all that survives. The rectangular cist lies roughly centrally within the circle and is oriented E to W. It measures 1.2m long by 0.6m and 0.5m deep with slabs still in place both sides".
Further information can also be found on the Pastscape website, see Monument Number 442267, which describes this cairn circle and cist as "surrounded by an incomplete stone circle ... there are nine stones remaining in the circle which has an internal diameter of just over 11 feet. The whole character is that of a retaining circle around a barrow, but the mound has completely disappeared."
The Heritage Gateway for Devon & Dartmoor HER number MDV4276, dates the cairn to the Bronze Age (2200 BC to 701 BC).
This site is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 1002525 (Round Barrow on Dendles Waste (Kerbed cairn with cist in Dendles Waste, 920m SSW of Yealm Steps)).
