Mynydd Egryn Settlement
Mynydd Egryn Settlement submitted by pab : Mynydd Egryn (Mount Egryn). Midway between the 2 tombs of Carneddau Hengwm and the crown-effect cairn circle of Hengwm on the slopes of Mynydd Egryn. A series of circles seem to have been recently excavated. This picture looks over the circle towards NE (the top of Moelfre bearing 11' if that helps locate it) (Vote or comment on this photo)
Adjacent to the Hengwm Ring Cairn when we visited in June 2008, there seemed to be a number of circular structures, including an apparent circular outline at least 30m across.

The features were clear enough on the ground for us to note the GPS readings to help us find out more - having now had a chance to look on COFLEIN, there are clearly the remains of the 'unenclosed hut circle settlement.

The COFLEIN entry also includes an aerial picture of the excavations in 2005, as well as a general aerial photo on which the Hengwm Circle Cairn is also visible.

There certainly seems to be much in the area worth further investigation, and presumably the 2005 excavations will have been written up - so more research beckons! I have also found some items written by the Gwynedd Archaeology Society about this general area, which I will try and sift through to see if it throws any more light... There seem to have been later excavations of the circles just visible at the top right-hand corner of COFLEIN's aerial photo - there were a number of disturbed circles there, and I will post some pictures shortly.

COFLEIN entry: NPRN 55995: Mynydd Egryn Hut Circle Settlement

Mynydd Egryn Settlement
Mynydd Egryn Settlement submitted by pab : Mynydd Egryn hut circle settlement. This picture, taken from SH 61472040, looks over the Pen-y-Dinas Hillfort towards the beginning of the Lleyn Peninsula. The elevated position of this settlement will have been readily accessible to both high ground and coastal plain, and it is in sight of so many wonderful places. And we saw no-one on the 6k+ circuit we did from A496 past here and Pen-y-Di... (3 comments)

Mynydd Egryn Settlement
Mynydd Egryn Settlement submitted by pab : Mynydd Egryn (Mt Egryn) hut circle settlement. There are signs of recent excavation of these hut circles - which are located on the elevated land between the coastal plain and the slopes of Mynydd Egryn. The are only a couple of minutes from the 2 tombs of Carneddau Hengwm and the Hengwm Ring Cairn.

Mynydd Egryn Settlement
Mynydd Egryn Settlement submitted by pab : Mynydd Egryn hut circle settlement. To the right (east) of the crown-effect Hengwm Cairn circle, there are a number of hut circles visible on the ground. There also seems to be a 30m+ circular raised feature, which is also visible on the RCAHMW aerial photo linked to from the main site page.

So if anyone is interested in finding these hut circles, they can be separated out.
The Mynydd Egryn Settlement close to (right next to) the Hengwm Ring Cairn is a Scheduled Monument and because of this it is unlikely to be excavated -
http://cadwpublic-api.azurewebsites.net/reports/sam/FullReport?lang=en&id=907

The Coflein reference above describes it clearly.

But this is a very large field with other hidden hut circles and cairns, and one has been excavated for the Ardudwy Early Landscapes Project. It has been reconstructed to mark the position. This has it’s own Coflein entry with some notes on what was found -

https://coflein.gov.uk/en/site/413033/

To see this one you have to walk 250 meters WNW downhill from the main settlement and search among the tufts of rush bog grasses as it is a very low structure, but quite lovely when you find it.

The Ardudwy Early Landscapes Project can be accessed here -

Visited this area last week and was struck by this site. The structure in the first two photos seemed to me far too 'neat and tidy', somehow, to be authentic, and it is not marked on the 1:25 000 map as an antiquity although there is enough room so to do. The 'kerbstones' do not appear to be sunk into the ground at all, which is odd (pab's photos show this). All rather strange, but what do I know. The 'true' Mynydd Egryn settlement is a couple of hundred yards further uphill, as shown in the 4th photo, right next to Hengwm Ring Cairn.
