Down Tor cairn
Down Tor cairn submitted by TheCaptain : About 50 metres to the northwest of the beautiful cairn circle, around the edge of the hillside, is the remains of another cairn, 14 metre diameter and more than a metre high. About 50 metres to the northwest of the beautiful cairn circle, around the edge of the hillside, is the remains of another cairn, 14 metre diameter and more than a metre high. There are no signs of any kerb stones or structure within the cairn.

All around here the moor surface is cratered by tinners pits, but they seem to have left the cairn completely alone, and not disturbed it.

Update September 2019: This cairn is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Down Tor Cairn, which includes a description, a photograph, plus links to other sources of information.

The cairn is also recorded as Pastscape Monment No. 438580, which adds there is an area of disturbance in the centre top of the cairn, and some post-medieval tin pits on its south-western side. The Devon and Dartmoor HER also includes a record; see MDV3440 (Round cairn and later tin prospecting pits 615 metres east-south-east of Down Tor).

The cairn is also scheduled as part of Historic England List ID 1009089 (Round cairn and later tin prospecting pits 615m ESE of Down Tor), which tells us: "(the cairn is) situated on a saddle between the north west flank of Eylesbarrow and Down Tor. The cairn mound measures 15.5m in diameter and stands up to 1.5m high. A `T'-shaped trench cutting into the centre of the mound suggests partial early excavation, although the results of the investigation are not known".
