After parking at the National Trust car park, Southgate ( as the local cliff top roads are privately owned ), it is a pleasant 1 km walk either along the open, wind-swept cliff top or the adjacent metalled road, east to Hunts bay, and thence the public footpath acoss towards Pwll Du head. Just before the actual south facing headland of Pwll Du, a separate promontory faces south west towards Lundy island, and it is upon here that High Pennard promontory fort will be found.

Coflein records that the site is over-wild with gorse and fern, but this week's visit was otherwise, with the two ditch/embankments to be clearly seen. The most easterly, the outer, is marginally the lesser of the two being perhaps less well defined, and, after a goodly depth of maybe 10m or more to the inner ditch, its embankment rises in a somewhat ( albeit very low ) motte impression to the inner space of the fort.

Three houses have been identified here in the main plateau of the fort, but where is anyone's guess, as the fort is cut through in part on its north and north-westerly sides by 19C quarry workings. Indeed, an attraction of the whole location are the many quarry pits. It is clear that the whole south and westerly sides have been historically quarried away, as the very small plateau of the fort drops away 200ft down to the sea shore and rocks below.

It is impossible to know how the westerly side cliffs were during the 1st and 2nd C. occupation when seen today, for as a defensive and protective site, the location offers its occupants few options.
