Stone Circle, Sourton Tors, Dartmoor, Devon

The remains of this stone circle can be seen on the saddle between the slopes of Sourton Tors and Corn Ridge, just to the south of the boundary work separating the two hills.

There are 18 or 19 stones present of the circle, at about 5 or 6 metres spacing, which is a bit more than 30m diameter. Although almost all the stones are flat to the ground, one or two remain slightly sticking up at a very low angle. Each of the stones is between one and two metres in length and most are fairly rounded in shape.

This stone circle is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Sourton Tors Stone Circle, which tells us: "(This is) a stone circle, diameter about 110 ft and appearing to have comprised 32 stones of which all but six remain where they have fallen, has been discovered between Sourton Tors and Cornridge. In size it compares with the circles of the Grey Wethers and Scorhill".

The circle is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 440575, as MDV4626 (Stone circle south-east of Sourton Tors) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER, and scheduled as part of Historic England List Entry No. 1007827 (Stone circle, cairn alignment, cider millstone and boundary ditch 410m south east of Sourton Tors).

Stone Circle, Sourton Tors, Dartmoor, Devon SX546896
Visited Tuesday, 1st June 2004, as part of a days walk on the North West moor.

The remains of this stone circle can be seen on the saddle between the slopes of Sourton Tors and Corn Ridge, just to the south of the boundary work separating the two hills. I had not seen Michaels comment above. The circle is not at the position on the slopes quoted in the previous listing, and I spent quite some time trying to imagine myself a circle at the quoted point, having gone there with my GPS.

Not giving up, I went and had a look in the more likely place for a circle on the saddle of the hills, and it was fairly clear to an experienced stonehunter, although my friends at first doubted its existence! The grid ref for the circle according to my GPS is SX 54678959. The giveaway to finding this circle without a GPS is that it lies just to the southeast of the remains of half an applecrusher which has been carved from a block of granite, but been left up on the moors.

the correct grid reference is SX546895.It is about 40 yds from one half of an abandoned granite apple crush (cider maker).I visited it yesterday. All the stones are lying flat but make an obvious circle.I counted 21 stones - more are probably buried in situ.
