Chambered Cairn in Dumfries & Galloway

For more information about this Neolithic Chambered Cairn see Canmore ID 63693 which records: "(There are) four monoliths in a field 1/2 mile SW of Newton are all that remains of the burial chamber of a Clyde-type (J G Scott 1969) unclassified (A S Henshall 1972) cairn. They enclose an area 7' by 3' oriented ENE-WSW. The stones at the ENE have been set 2'2" apart, but the S Stone now leans inwards. The N stone is 4'5" high and the S stone 5' high. Between these is a slab 1'3" high, set on its long side. At the WSW end, the N stone is 5'3" high but the S stone 6'9" in total height, has fallen to rest at an angle of 45 diametrically across the enclosure. A stone 3' by 1' just above ground level formed the WSW end of the enclosure and still remained in 1954 but has since been removed. A stone lying between the pillar-stones on the NNW side is probably not in situ. Formerly it seems to have lain in the centre of the enclosure."
