This cup marked stone, also known as the "Stone of the Eyes" is recorded on Canmore ID 24150 which tells us: "a large boulder used to be visible on the left-hand side of the road, east from Balquhidder, beyond the farm-house of Wester Auchleskine. It had a natural cavity in its side, famous as a curing-well for sore eyes, people putting money in the cavity. It was called "Clach nan sul" - the stone of the eyes. It was broken up for road metal in 1878." The entry is updated in 1968 to read: "the remains of this stone, considerably fractured and the natural cavity no longer evident, were pointed out ..... in the bank on the N side of the road at NN 5456 2084. It is still known as 'Clach nan sul'.
The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also feature a page on this stone - see their entry for Clach nan Sul, Balquhidder, Perthshire, which gives a brief archaeology and history and local folklore, together with a photograph. TNA also mentions that "There are numerous accounts of other stones in this mountainous region of Scotland where rocks-with-hollows filled with water were attributed with healing properties, like the Whooping Cough Stone at Struan, the Measles Stone at Fearnan, and many others."
