Conon Bridge
Conon Bridge submitted by Creative Commons : Henge in Conon Bridge This ancient earthwork lies incongruously among modern housing close to the centre of the village of Conon Bridge. It almost certainly dates from at least 2000BC. It's amazing that it has survived! Copyright Richard Dorrell and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Licence. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A henge monument consisting of a flat circular area 48' in diameter, surrounded by a ditch 9' wide, with an entrance causeway in the SE, 5' wide. A bank 12' wide surrounds the ditch but has no entrance to correspond with the causeway; the bank is 80' - 85' in overall diameter.

At first sight, this seems to be a Class I henge, 75' in diameter measured from the crest of the bank, but only excavation can determine whether the bank was origianally fully annular; if it were so then, at best, the structure could be called a protohenge or hengiform earthwork. Whether henge or not, it is extremely likely to be of about 2nd or 3rd millenium BC date.

Highland Henge Trail from the North of Scotland Archaeological Society by Andy B on Wednesday, 14 January 2015
(User Info | Send a Message)
Roland Spencer-Jones from the North of Scotland Archaeological Society (NOSAS) writes:

Henges in Highland seem to be a bit different from other UK henges. Smaller, later, less flamboyant. More akin to the quiet steady Highland temperament, perhaps.

A henge is usually defined as a circular enclosure, surrounded by a ditch, surrounded by a bank, with one or two entrances. They can be, but don’t need to be, associated with internal burials, or standing stones, or posts. They are generally a varied lot. Although the earliest known UK henge is at Stenness in Orkney, approx 3100BC at the start of the later Neolithic, the biggest and most spectacular henges in the UK are dated to 4-500 years later, around the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. They are part of that fundamental change from square or rectangular monuments in the early Neolithic to a variety of round monuments in the later Neolithic.

[the trail goes on to visit these Highland henges: Achilty, Culbokie, Sydera Wood, Migdale, Baddhu, Ascoile, Pullyhour (excavated by Richard Bradley and team in 2008), Ullapool Braes (only recently been identified), and Auchtertyre, where the jury is still out. I've not had a change to check if we have all these listed - I suspect not... - MegP Ed]

It looks well cared-for, particularly on the streetview image. The house opposite must have one of the most unusual views in the UK.
