Originally thought to be the remains of a Neolithic stone circle and cairn, this site in Dumfries & Galloway is now thought to be the remains of a long cairn, however there is no trace of a passage or chamber. Although the standing stones may have formed a facade this cannot be substantiated without excavation.

Canmore tells us that in 1912: "At this site, there are the remains of a stone circle, associated with the site of a cairn 22' in diameter. Around it ... were eight stones, two of which had fallen, and the two behind the cairn site merely protruded above the ground. Five of these stones lay approximately on the arc of a circle 45' in diameter which would almost pass through the centre of the cairn. The other three stones lay well S of this circle, though two of them are almost on the arc of an outer, concentric circle 20' away - an unusually large distance. The highest stone, E of the centre of the inner circle, was 4'6" high."

By 1972, they record that much of the site has been robbed to built nearby walls, then in a 1994 site visit say: "this site is located in an improved-pasture field about 300m NE of High Auchenlarie farmsteading. It appears to consist of a robbed cairn measuring 13m in diameter and 0.5m in height with a row of three stones running ENE from its N edge and another three stones to the E, forming a rough N to S line."

RCAHMS conclude, however, that the stone setting is "unlikely to be the remains of a stone circle .... the remains (at this site) may simply be of two converging field dykes, almost entirely robbed out."

Re: High Auchenlarie by Anonymous on Monday, 14 November 2022
Beautiful spot with an amazing view out to sea. Initially I couldn't see how to get up and into the fields behind High Auchenlarie farm but just as I was about to give up, Judith, who lives at the farm, came out and said as no one was at the cottage, a holiday let, I could park there.

She had opened up the field gate next to the cottage and told me to go up and through the next gate in the middle of the field so I could continue up and right and easily cross the dyke. Once across I headed towards the fields behind the barn and the circle and cairn were behind a gorse topped mound.

Well worth it. Beautiful views, lovely energy.
