Stone Circle in Dumfries & Galloway

Nine stones survive in an arc on the north and west of this Neolithic stone circle situated in the 'saddle' between Cambret Hill and Cairnharrow, with two others visible in the turf on the rest of the circumference. It is recorded as Canmore ID 63691 which tells us the stones: "define a circle about 25m in diameter. The largest surviving stone, which lies on the WSW, stands to a height of 1.2m and measures 0.8m by 0.2m at the base. The stones are all thin slabs, with their broad faces aligned on the circumference of the circle. What may be an outlier to the circle lies some 100m to the NNE (NX 5298 5723); it comprises a flat slab protruding from the peat with its long axis orientated towards the centre of the circle. See also the stone setting at NX 5291 5722."

Cauldside Burn Stone Circle
Cauldside Burn Stone Circle submitted by HardcoreDave : In this picture you can just make out this stone circle, which appears to be missing quite a few stones. All of the stones seem to be only a couple of feet in height. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Cauldside Burn Stone Circle submitted by MDunbar : Visited on 09/07/2015. I counted ten stones still visible in a circle about 30 yards in diameter. The NW quadrant of the circle seems to be best preserved. The cairn is impressive I noticed a deep hole right at the summit of the cairn looking like someone had dug down deep into its centre. Cauldside Burn Stone Circle submitted by HardcoreDave : This picture illustrates the large cairn that is right beside this circle. This cairn does appear on the OS map but does not seem no have a name. The cairn looks like it has never been excavated. This picture also shows most of the stones in this circle as it very incomplete.

Using Bing's OS mapping (the Measure Distance option), this circle aligns with the chambers at Cairnholy 2 & 1. Make of that what you will.

I got to this site by walking all the way from Glenquicken stone circle.

This was about a mile and a half walk up (and down) the Cambret Hill, through Cambret Moor, via lots of sheep.

In hindsight, I would drive to the top of Cambret Hill and then walk down from there. On the way down, there are lots of cairns not marked on the OS map and possibly some stone circles. (There are lots of stones in that field but due to it being a windy, cold day in Galloway, I didn't investigate further.

On the top of Cambret Hill there are some large scary looking transmitters and the road to this is marked as a Private Road... but it's Scotland and we have no tresspassing laws etc. so if you do go up there, there is enough space to park by the cattle grid on that road.

When I visited Glenquicken there was a farmer driving about in his quad bike with his sheepdog.
He waved and us and seemed fairly friendly.

More pictures to come...
