Kirkdale Burn
Kirkdale Burn submitted by SumDoood : Kirkdale Burn from the north. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Cairn in Dumfries and Galloway

A 1.7m high cairn located on the western side of Kirkdale Burn. It is partly disturbed, especially in the central part.

Kirkdale Burn at Scotlands Places.

More from SumDoood:
Park in the three vehicle car park W of Cairnholy 1. Walk NE along the track and at the first gate on the right after Cairnholy 1 and before Cairn Holy 2, enter the field. If it has not turned over to arable, then this field is likely to be the home of a large, docile, black bull.

Through another gate in that field enter the next field to the north. (Before you do that, you'll have noticed on your right down the slope a pile of stones which perhaps once was a cairn, but is more likely to be the result of relatively recent field clearance.

A gently curving track, which feels as if it might be an ancient route, leads north through what has the appearance of an ancient quarry, i.e. large rocks abound, some landfast, and some, being propped on smaller stones, definitely not. They include two main types, shaley ones which seems almost to have been snapped away from their place of origin leaving straight ends, and others with scalloped depressions. (Both types are very noticeable in the facade at Cairnholy 1).

Within this 2nd field Kirkdale Burn will become increasingly obvious, as will the large area to the south of it which is apparently built up and levelled.

Canmore ID 63757 which adds: "This cairn stands on a terrace above the W bank of the Kirkdale Burn, 140m ENE of Cairnholy farmsteading, in a situation which provides an open outlook to the SW. It measures 14.5m in diameter and 1.7m in height, but it has suffered considerable disturbance: the centre has been dug out and it has been clipped around the edge by ploughing."

Kirkdale Burn
Kirkdale Burn submitted by SumDoood : 20.03.18: Kirkdale Burn cairn from Cairnholy 2. The structure bottom left is thought to be more recent. (Locally Kirkdale is pronounced Curdle). (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Kirkdale Burn
Kirkdale Burn submitted by SumDoood : In the "quarry" area is what seems to be a left-behind standing stone lying on small rocks which keep it above ground level. Cairnholy 2 is on the horizon. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Kirkdale Burn
Kirkdale Burn submitted by SumDoood : Notice in the centre near the horizon the two gateways of your approach route. Cairnholy 2 is on the horizon to the right. Straight ahead is the apparently flattened (rather than flat), area on which there is a (very probably incidental, I feel), D-shaped stone circle. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Kirkdale Burn
Kirkdale Burn submitted by SumDoood : South towards the Isle of Man across the apparently flattened area next to the cairn. The land to the right is the Machars peninsula. The shoulder on the left is the edge of Cairnholy 3. (1 comment)

Kirkdale Burn
Kirkdale Burn submitted by SumDoood : Just inside the first gateway is a docile bull lying next to what seems to be a non-accidentally arrived stone similar to those used to form the chambers of Cairnholy 1 and 2.

This site is aka Cairn Holy 3, or Cairnholy 3. Locals say Kirdle (like gone-off milk) rather than kirk-dale.

I think Cairnholy 3 is the name given to now lost rock art a little to the north of this cairn - Canmore. Also mentioned on TMA.
