Rock Art in Dumfries and Galloway

The simplest approach is from the north end of the public road at 54.865056, -4.297384 (where one, or with care two vehicles can be parked), across a field to the west (it seems to me to have plenty of ancient piled stone features), across a narrow stream, and up the open hillside. I have found the farmers to be friendly, but there is a red-faced gamekeeper who is not.

Cairnholy 6 consists of cup and ring markings on what is either a large recumbent stone, or bedrock, at the bottom of a not very successful 30cm deep drainage ditch running parallel to the east-west field boundary wall. I located the site by reference to the walls marked on the OS 1:25000 map only, but what first caught my attention was the longer of two rocks on the north bank of the ditch. Not surprisingly weed has grown over and around the cup and ring markings. It's tempting to think that there might be much more art covered by soil either side of the ditch.

This cup and ring marked rock is recorded as Canmore ID 63737 which says they detected three cups with one ring each and five plain cups. It's location is described as being: "on the N side of a drainage ditch in rough pasture, about 10m N of a field dyke and some 150m ENE of a sheepfold. The surface of the stone, which is partly hidden by turf, measures 2m in length from ENE to WSW by 0.7m in breadth."

Cairnholy 6
Cairnholy 6 submitted by Energyman : Near miss by the farmer's rock cutting machine, but I think it's completely obliterated some art. The scale rod (300mm) is in one of the cut grooves, and there are two cups above, one pecked, and one that looks unfinished - with tool marks. Also a 4cm deep cone shaped cup. 3.15pm 13/4/19

The red-faced gamekeeper retired a couple of years ago now.
