Lligwy Burial Chamber
Lligwy Burial Chamber submitted by Jimwithnoname : Amazing dolmen and very unnerving sat underneath the 25 ton capstone. It's perched on very little it seems on the one side. The warden approached us as we sat eating at the site. He asked if we were thinking of stopping the night, which we were, but as he said. that's a no no. We respected him and moved on after our picnic. He was quite pleasant and only doing his job. Many people wild camp as he ... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Within easy access from the road this megalithic beetle has a huge capstone 5m x 6m balanced on top of a number of smaller stones covering the chamber hollowed out from the rock.

Coflein site entry:https://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/95532
Additional information submitted by Drew Parsons September 2010:
Excavated in 1908-9 the remains of up to 30 men, women and children were found at the site together with animal bones, shells, flints and pot sherds, in two layers of burial. The lastest burials appear to have taken place around 4000 years ago giving a period of 1000 years between construction and final use. The massive 25 ton capstone is 5 metres long and 1 metre thick and carries cut marks along its edges where hewing would have occurred.

I get something I call dolmenophobia... I get paranoid the things will fall on; Lligwy a case in point. It that thing slips, there's no way your getting out in 3D... Trethevy Quoit, with its steeply angled capstone is another which worries me! If I can get over that, yes, it is peaceful! Other non megarak folk can't understand why I like to spend time where there were lots of dead people...

Interesting info - thanks for feeding back.

We met a very interesting couple at Lligwy. The guy was a
Paleontologist and explained how the rock had been cut from the bed rock and described the process. Paleontologists use the same process to lift fossils. Very interesting. Terry and I had decided the groves down the sides of the capstone were limestone weathering, when infact they are cut marks.
I laid down inside the chamber. It was very peaceful, I highly recommend it!
