Cup and Ring marks / Rock Art in Highlands

Clachmhor, the Great Stone, is a fine cup marked rock of grey gneiss above Glen Urquhart. There are 90-100 cup marks on the rock, some joined in pairs. The rock lies near to a stream on a plateau above Milton and Drumnadrochit; from it there is an extensive view southwards.

Another cup marked stone with two cups visible is embedded in the turf about 60 yards west of Clachmhor at NH49873107. (The stone is in the corner of the field, outside the fence, at the junction of the track to Culnakirk Farm and to a new house SE of Clachmhor.) Other cups may be hidden under the turf; W Jolly, who visited the site in 1882, reported 5 cups, all 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter. (See Canmore NH43SE 2 and NH43SE 3).
