Bryn Gwyn Stones
Bryn Gwyn Stones submitted by petelovespurple : I'd been to see Castell Bryn Gwyn, noticed the stones marked on the map, when I got there discovered there was a dig going on, they had found the base of one of the destroyed stones plus stone holes for other stones, I'd have thought there would be more info here...... more photos in a set of the same name on my Flickr photostream (Vote or comment on this photo)
Two enormous stones, dwarfing anybody next to them. When I visited, the tallest was crowned with ivy. As usual, both were covered with lichens.

Access: Parked up at a layby on a bend on the A4080 from Newborough to Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, just west of Brynsiencyn. Follow the line of trees and hedges, splitting two fields apart, going to the left or right side of the line (the stones are in the line of the hedges, so either side gives access).

About 3 minutes walk down, in the hedge you will see the stones. Very easy access.

Bryn Gwyn Stones
Bryn Gwyn Stones submitted by TimPrevett : A recent tree-fall, and considerable hedgerow clearance has opened up a previously impossible shot of these two stones. They are among the largest, if not *the* largest standing stones in Wales. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Bryn Gwyn Stones
Bryn Gwyn Stones submitted by guile : These two stones are huge. The taller of the two clearly showing the notches for roof timbers when it was used as an 18th. century cottage gable end. Perhaps it was a ‘Ty Un Nos’ - or house built overnight. According to ancient laws, if you could build a house between sunset and sunrise, with walls, roof and smoking chimney, you could claim the freehold. As ever, there seems to be... (4 comments)

Bryn Gwyn Stones
Bryn Gwyn Stones submitted by TimPrevett : Returning from the very near henge / hillfort, this view of the stones really struck me. The tree dwarfs the enormous stones. The first rain in several weeks waters an already cracked ground and waters the fresh spring growth.

Bryn Gwyn Stones
Bryn Gwyn Stones submitted by AngieLake : Two separate views, side-by-side for comparison. Moving into the shadow of the 'blockier' stone it suddenly looks fat and rectangular, then just rectangular. The late afternoon sun flooded into the lens. [Mid-June 2006].

Bryn Gwyn Stones
Bryn Gwyn Stones submitted by AngieLake : Here the 'blockier' Bryn Gwyn stone becomes less ship-like, and more like an arrowhead. Her eastern side is in shadow. The taller stone lies to the left of this view. [mid-June 2006].

H. Rowlands Mona Antiqua Restaurata 2nd ed. 1766. 89-92 Pl. IV records three large stones at this site and the stump of a fourth which he said formed the arc of a circle about 40 foot in diameter.

If you've parked on the Brynsiencyn rd, it is as far again, as from the car to these stones, to visit the henge cum hillfort... just continue to the end of the field, over two tall stiles, a diagonal right, and bob's your uncle.

Enkidu41 posted a pic of these two stones, and mentioned that they were possibly 'entrance flankers' of a stone circle.
After looking at the pics I've posted here it suddenly struck me that in the photo where they frame distant Snowdon, they do appear - from that angle - to resemble an axehead (blocky one) and the tip of a sword (tall thin one). Whether they originally looked like this, or have weathered over the years, I don't know, but those shapes could be significant.

Hello Angie

That CADW guide for Anglesey only records a few choice sites on the Isle; I prefer using the Ordnance Survey Maps (1:25000) as my primary source, then heavily supplementing that with research on the web and guidebooks.

Anglesey is brilliant (as you know!)

I stayed at a B&B near here, overlooking the Menai Straits. The owners had a few artifacts that they (farmers) had picked up on their land, including a beautiful polished stone axehead. I saw many lovely megalithic sites that weekend, travelling around Ynys Mon, but didn't realise these two stones were so close to the farm. They aren't recorded in the Anglesey guide I bought at Oriel Ynys Mon, the heritage centre at Llangefni.

Another of the hidden gems of Anglesey. It is a few hundred yards up the road from Castell Bryn-Gwyn, and may be connected in some way. The stones themselves are visible from the main road going towards Brynsciencyn, but disguised as part of the field wall. Up close, they are impressive - easily the biggest on Anglesey. Two stones, one quite broad and squat, the other tall and wafer-thin. Unfortunately there is a field gate between them, which had the usual accumulation of old iron, string and pallets when I visited, but they are well worth a look if you are in the area.
