Parys Mountain
Parys Mountain submitted by guile : A bleak landscape, the result of nearly 4,000 years of mining. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Mynydd Parys is located south of Amlwch which is in north east Anglesey. Excavations in 2002 enabled sub-surface debris to be dated to nearly four thousand years old.

The copper from the mine at Parys Mountain dominated the world's markets during the 1780s, when the mine was allegededly the largest in the world. It was used to sheath the admiralty's wooden ships of war in order to prevent the growth of seaweed and barnacles and to prevent boring by worms. This increased the speed and manoeuvrability of the vessels, although it is said that Parys Mountain copper was also sold to the French for use by their fleet.

Excavations in 2002 enabled sub-surface debris to be dated to nearly four thousand years old, (the early Bronze Age), and access has also been regained to the sealed underground workings of the Parys mine revealing evidence for this ancient mining. Parys Mountain is thus an addition to the very few sites in Britain where there is evidence for the prehistoric beginnings of the British metal mining industry.

Parys Mountain submitted by MarkHatton : These hand hammers in Parys Mine in Anglesey are a bit special. I believe the workings here are Bronze Age and carbon dating of the charcoal like layers are consistent with that. The working was created by fire setting then rapidly cooled with water to fracture the rock which was then levered out using antlers. The work is surprisingly deep. The shaft must have filled in leaving the void below. Wh... (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Grant to ancient copper mine by Anonymous on Wednesday, 14 December 2005
A BRONZE Age copper mine is to be turned into a major tourist attraction thanks to a major EU grant.

Amlwch Industrial Heritage Trust was awarded an Interreg IIIA grant of £385,000 to raise the profile of Mynydd Parys near Amlwch, Anglesey.

It includes £75,000 from Anglesey County Council and £20,000 from the Environment Agency.

The old copper mine will be marketed as a tourist destination with the hope of bringing economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits to the area.

The mines and open cast sites at Mynydd Parys played a major part in launching the industrial revolution in Britain and western Europe.

The trust will work closely with the Environment Agency in setting up a pilot plant for the treatment of acid mine drainage.

Afon Adda is one of the most polluted rivers in Wales and the project intends to establish the most suitable treatment methods to tackle the problem.

A similar project will be carried out on the Avoca river.
