Cairn in Dumfries & Galloway

Creebridge cairn This cairn is located on the outskirts of Minnigaff/Newton Stewart and is superbly preserved. It could be associated with a number of cairns in this area. To find it drive along the B7079 from Minnigaff towards the A75 - the cairn is in a roadside clearing at NX41706560 and stands at least 4m tall. The noticeboard is informative.

For more information see Canmore ID 63432, which, in their original 1914 entry describes "A circular cairn about 65ft in diameter and 8 to 9ft high standing on a level platform of stones which extends out from it for a distance of from 15 to 20ft. The ground falls slightly towards the S, and in that direction the base has an elevation of about 4ft 6ins. On the N it appears to be somewhat lower, but has been interfered with by the bank at the roadside. The cairn has not been excavated."

By 1966 they report this bell-type cairn had been mutilated on the north side.

Creebridge Cairn
Creebridge Cairn submitted by SumDoood : From the Forestry Commission's offices' car park, this shows the extent of the removed area of this once large cairn. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Creebridge Cairn
Creebridge Cairn submitted by SumDoood : This is from the N and shows the partly quarried side of this large cairn. The two upward steps in the foreground, being higher than the general lie of the land are, I assume, part of the structure. They continue all the way around. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Large Cairn in good state of preservation. Sadly located between a council estate and an industrial site..still worth a visit.
