Bachwen
Bachwen submitted by AngieLake : The lovely dolmen near Clynnog Fawr seems to echo the shapes of the surrounding hills. After a dull afternoon the sun broke through about 6.30pm on 13 June 2006. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This dolmen, with a thin wedge-shaped capstone supported on 4 stones, is in a farmer's field with views down to the sea, and over to the hills Yr Eifl with its hillfort Tre'r Ceiri.

Its most distinctive feature is the capstone which is highly decorated on its upper surface with 110 cup-marks and 2 shallow grooves. There are a further 8 cup-marks on the capstone's eastern edge.

Bachwen
Bachwen submitted by AngieLake : As the sun started to dip in the western sky the dolmen (or cromlech) cast a shadow like a Stonehenge trilithon towards the ESE. The saddle on the hill behind (Bwlch Mawr??) aligned at SE with the dolmen.

Bachwen
Bachwen submitted by AngieLake : I vowed to visit this site after seeing one of Hamish's earlier pics. I took loads of photos in cloudy conditions, then, just before I was due to leave (about 6.30pm) the sun came out! Cue: a repeat performance and an expensive visit for me, using my non-digital cameras. This picturesque site is now one of my all-time favourite places, and I was very fortunate to have it all to myself for 2 hr... (1 comment)

Bachwen submitted by nicoladidsbury : The Dolmen is in a farmer's field, with views down to the see, and over to the hills Yr Eifl with its hillfort Tre'r Ceiri. The sheep spotted me and ran, they must have sensed that I wanted their lambs in my photos for the Megalithic Portal Spring Competition.

Bachwen submitted by hamish : This is the last of my pictures of this Dolmen, if you're in the area pay it a visit it's worth it. I said before about the pub,but if you're of a mind you can also visit St. Bueno's well just down the street from the Church it is said to be refreshing. (4 comments)

Bachwen submitted by hamish : Another view of the dolmen pity about the rails but they must protect this. It's strange, the footpath from the Church ends here at this spot.

Hi--What is the height of the uprights? I read the capstone was 9 feet across.

Thanks for any info.

Just a note for anyone planning to visit the wonderful Bachwen, or Clynnog Fawr dolmen...

When I went to the Llyn/Lleyn Peninsula a couple of weeks' ago, a new bypass had just been opened. This cuts between the village and the coast, and it wasn't apparent if there will be any difficulty getting access to the site. Coming, as this discovery did, the day after my visit to the new road system beside Trefignath tomb, I'd kind of 'lost-the-will' to find out!
However, a visit to the great old church of St Beuno was worth a second stop there. There's a display on the history of the area inside, as well as the 'Maen Bueno' stone, and the lovely old sundial in the church grounds. The 'Pilgrim's Trail' leaflet is handy for info on the churches [and any associated stones, etc.], which are included in the route from here to Bardsey Island.

I imagine visiting the holy well will be easier without the constant traffic along that road now.

Good photos Hamish.
Now then let's see

Photo 1 was taken looking SW, Photo 2 was taken with your back to the sea, therefore looking in a roughly E direction, in Photo 3 you were looking in a northerly direction, in Photo 4 the camera points west towards Bae Caernarfon.
All the best.

Pob Hwyl.
