An Erratic Boulder in East Ayrshire. Thougritstane, an erratic boulder c. 0.5 mile N of Dunlop, lies in pasture land adjacent to the A735. This squat stone measures c. 13 x 10 feet in cross-section and up to 4 feet high.
Canmore ID 43053 states that there were ’ allegations that it was a ‘Druidical Alter’ ’ for the nearby St Mary’s Chapel. All traces of St Mary’s Chapel have since been rased according to Canmore ID 43048

The stone is also known locally as Thurgartstone and The Ogrestone.

Directions: Follow the A735 N out of Dunlop. There is a bend c. 200 yards after the 30mph zone ends. After another c. 200 yards there is a gateway on the L with a well defined path leading W. Park up and walk W parallel to the field edge for c. 200 yards uphill to reach Thougritstane.
