Anne T visited on 17th Jun 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Torhousekie Farm Cairn: With tea-time fast approaching and cars whizzing up and down the road at high speed, Andrew pulled into a gateway opposite the cairn whilst I hopped out to take some photos. It was a lot more interesting than it looked, with definite structures on the sides and top. I could only view it from the field to the east, where part of it protruded into the field, cut by a dry stone wall.

markj99 visited on 30th Jul 2011 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Torhousekie Farm Cairn has survived in better condition than the E cairns which have been erased from the landscape. The overall footprint of the cairn is intact and there are original stones scattered on the centre of the low mound. It is possible to park in a gateway on the B733 at NX 3790 5669. Head N across the field for c. 130 yards to a gate in the dry stane dyke. Torhousekie Farm Cairn is c. 70 yards SW of here parallel to the dry stane dyke. My route is viewable on Torhouse Farm Cairn.

Robbed Bell Cairn in Dumfries and Galloway

This one of two cairns adjacent to the Torhousekie Stone Circle site. This is the one nearer the farm. Started raining so never made the other - wimp.

Update June 2017: This cairn is recorded as Canmore ID 62842, and is one of a number of cairns on the northern side of the B733, north and north west of the stone circle and west of the stone row (these all have their own site pages; see 'nearby sites' below).

An 1877 report records: "This (cairn) stands on level ground in a pasture field and is bounded on the south and east by a shallow gully of no defensive falue. The remains consist of two concentric dry stone walls, 8-9ft apart, heavily robbed and turf covered, enclosing an area 42ft in diameter".

A more recent site visit in 1970 modifies this entry to read: "The site appears to have consisted of a circular stony platform some 24.0m in diameter and 1.3m in maximum height on the NE where a line of (? revetting) boulders may be seen. Centrally placed within the platform, leaving a berm 3.0m wide, is a circular mound of small 'cairn- type' stones, 18.0m in diameter and averaging 0.8m in height, around the top of which there is a 'rim' typical of a robbed cairn. From this it may be inferred that this is a probable robbed bell-cairn".

Torhousekie Farm Cairn
Torhousekie Farm Cairn submitted by Anne T : With the zoom lens almost on maximum, trying to get a look at the stony 'cairn' or mound on top of the cairn. Canmore describes a berm 3m wide around this 'cairn on top of a cairn'. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Torhousekie Farm Cairn
Torhousekie Farm Cairn submitted by Anne T : The cairn as seen just from its north eastern side, looking over the fence (where the dry stone wall is lower). Had it not been for all the cattle in the field, I would have hopped over and taken a closer look.

Torhousekie Farm Cairn
Torhousekie Farm Cairn submitted by Anne T : The cairn as seen from about 50m to its eastern side - it is much larger than it appears from the gate into the field, having a diameter of 24m.

Torhousekie Farm Cairn
Torhousekie Farm Cairn submitted by Anne T : The cairn as seen from just to the west of the gate into the field at NX 37909 56690. At first it just looks like an uninteresting lump, dissected by a dry stone wall. Canmore adds that field clearance stones have been added to the cairn over the years.
