I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 18th Jun 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 4 White Cairn, Crouse: Our very last stop of this visit, and not a hugely dramatic one. The cairn has been used for field clearance, and there were lumps of concrete, barbed wire and old fence posts dumped at its western side. Whilst I was photographing the holed stone, I got an excited cry from Andrew, to say; “You can see through the holed stone from the cairn”, so I wandered through the gate between the two fields and walked onto the cairn. Yes, he was right – there was a glimmer of light through the hole, although what it was sighted on, I’m not sure.

Cairn in Dumfries

One field North of the Hole Stone is this much dilapidated cairn which according to RCAHMS measures some 90 feet by 85 feet. Cows in the field meant I couldn't access it this time. Exact coordinates now confirmed by Drew Parsons with GPS readings in September 2010 (the cows were more friendly to this antipodean!!)

For more information see Canmore ID 62871 which simply records this is: "a grass-covered cairn measuring 28.0m N-S by 27.0m E-W and 2.0m high".

White Cairn (Crouse)
White Cairn (Crouse) submitted by Anne T : Walking slightly up the slope of the cairn from its western side, stones become evident and the view of the Galloway Hills becomes clearer. Funny, as I remember the hills in the far distance dominating the skyline with their dark blue/gray outlines, but they don't show up as well on the photographs. (Vote or comment on this photo)

White Cairn (Crouse) submitted by Anne T : Walking through the field gate between the Holed Stone and the Cairn, the cairn is hardly visible except for a slight rise in the ground. (Vote or comment on this photo)
