Castell Bach (Pen y Graig)
Castell Bach (Pen y Graig) submitted by pab : Castell Bach, near Pen y Graig Farm, as seen from the coastal path between New Quay and Llangranog, Ceredigion. RCAHMW lists the site as having an 'enclosure complex' with a 90m stretch of rampart & ditch at the edge of a plain, about 100-130m across. The severe coastal erosion has destroyed much of the original area, but it has left a unique cross section across the ditch which is vis... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Village or Settlement in Ceredigion

The delight of the unexpected! We came across what we later learned was Castell Bach, while walking south of New Quay, Ceredigion. The double ramparts and ditch enclosed a cliff-top area looking down on a delightfully shaped outcrop.

As I had not noticed anything on the Portal to look out for on this stretch of coast, I was not initially sure that the ditch was really what it seemed - until I saw that the sea erosion has created an amazing section across the defences! I don't suppose you often get to see an Iron Age defensive ditch in profile?

Castell Bach (Pen y Graig) submitted by pab : Close-up of cross section from across bay. The severe erosion provides this wonderful chance to see a slice through the ditch and rampart - definitely worth a detour, take your binoculars both for this and for the dolphins!
